Description: Painter Decorator Apprenticeship Training is offered through DC17’s training arm Prairie Finishing Trades Institute (PFTI).
Apprenticeship training consists of 3 periods of technical training. Apprentices attend school for 8 weeks a year Monday to Friday. Upon completion apprentices are required to gain 1300 on the job hours for each level they are completing. PFTI utilizes the approved AIT curriculum that focuses on residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

The dates for 2023/24 school year are:
• Level 1 – October 23 2023 through Dec 15 2023
• Level 2 – January 8 2024 through March 1 2024
• Level 3 – March 11 2024 through May 3 2024

All participants must meet the registration requirements outlined by AIT and this program is only offered to apprentices registered with AIT. More information can be found at:

Apprentices must maintain their records of on the job hours through AIT’s bluebook system. Bluebooks are mailed out when you complete your registration as an apprentice with AIT and records are submitted through your mytradesecrets account.
PFTI’s Apprenticeship Training is recognized as a Red Seal Program and the Canada Revenue Agency recognizes our progam’s attendees to be eligible to claim Employment Insurance (EI) while attending.

Upon application you will be asked for a reference code. This can be found in your mytradesecrets account once you have registered for a period of training.
Government Grants: Grants are available through the Government of Canada. There are incentive, completion, and other grants available. Please review the below link.
Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) has recognized DC 17’s program for Painter Decorator apprenticeship. Saskatchewan apprentices can attend Painter Decorator training at our Edmonton, AB Facility.
All Saskatchewan attendees must be registered apprentices with SATCC.

As this training occurs out of province, Saskatchewan apprentices may also be eligible for additional financial support if attending training more than 50 km from their residence. Please visit the Financial Supports section of SATCC’s website for more information.
Saskatchewan apprentices are also eligible for the Financial Assistance grants and EI payments if they qualify.
Manitoba currently offers Painter Decorator Apprenticeship Training through Red River College. Apprentices must register as apprentices with the Province of Manitoba.
