Good turnout for SSPC C1 Fundamentals of Protective Coatings in Ft McMurray! Six (6) members & signatory contractor management attended. Course was held December 8 – 12, 2017 at IUPAT DC 17’s new space we rent @ the Operating Engineers Local 955.

SSPC C1, well-named the Fundamentals, is a great course. In 40 hours, C1 introduces students to industrial & marine coatings types, surface preparation, application methods, steel and concrete overview, corrosion theory, and a broad look at the coatings industry. C1 does cover a host of ASTM, ISO, etc., testing methods and QC gear, although it does not do the hands-on deep dive into these instruments like (for example) NACE CIP & SSPC PCIC1 is more global than the inspection courses.

In addition, C1 is fantastic prep for members upcoming SSPC Coating Applicator Specialists exams {week January 22, 2018 in Edmonton, week February 5, 2018 in Saskatoon}. More generally, in DC 17’s opinion, all industrial painters should at some point take C1.

This C1 class included a great group of students from a good mix of Ft McMurray signatory employers. DC 17 thanks all those who attended. Together, we are continuing to ‘raise the bar’ @ DC 17!

Special thanks to Lee Lakely, Dan Port, & Wayne Matthews at the Operating Engineer’s Local 955 for all their support and help in making their training room, etc., available. Great hosts!
