SSPC C3 & C5 (Edmonton)

SSPC C3 Supervisor [Edmonton], February 12-15, 2018 & SSPC C5 Refresher, February 16, 2018

IUPAT DC 17 offered SSPC C3 Supervisor / Competent Person For DeLeading / Hazardous Coatings Removal on Industrial & Marine Structures @ Local 177 in Edmonton February 12-15, 2018. Seven (7) members attended. Instructors were Bob Latimore of the FTI & Chris Hooter of DC 17.

In SSPC C3, a supervisory course, students “dive in” re abatement concerns of hazardous coatings, including lead, hexavalent chromium, cadmium, beryllium, and arsenic. Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental, and Transportation (of hazardous wastes) issues are thoroughly explored in C3, including engineering controls, containment designs, best hygiene practices, decontamination trailers and procedures, airborne monitoring, dust sampling, waste sampling, waste storage and treatment, greywater filtering and disposal requirements, group trigger tasks, legal obligations, etc., via class lectures and workshops.

SSPC C3 is arguably SSPC’s most challenging course. So, it isn’t necessarily for everybody. But if you / your company are seriously bidding lead abatement projects, C3 is absolutely critical to safely protect your workers, other trades, the public, and the environment.

SSPC C3 (and its refresher, C5) is mandatory for SSPC QP 2 Contractors for supervisory personnel.

And as part of that QP 2 push to ‘raise the bar’, twelve (12) members and signatory management attended C5 on February 16, 2018. C5 is required annually if employers are QP 2 certified, or seeking QP 2 certification; otherwise, C5 is required biannually. In general, C5 is offered on the back end of C3.

Special thanks to the FTI for sending long time SSPC C3 instructor, Bob Latimore, to help out. Bob, it was a pleasure hosting you!
