Oil Sands Safety Association = OSSA (correctly pronounced Oh-SA, not Oh-SHA), is a “non-profit organization made up of representatives from Syncrude Canada, Suncor Energy, Shell Albian Sands and Canadian Natural Resources, as well as volunteer members from the labor providers, union, area contractors and learning providers” [About OSSA].

If you are working on an Oil Sands member site, you will need the Oil Sands Safety Association version of Fall Protection (if working at heights), Elevated Work Platform (if working on man-lifts), and Confined Space Entry Monitor (if working in &/or monitoring confined spaces). More generally, OSSA courses have a good reputation, and are universally observed elsewhere in Alberta and usually in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Territories as well.

Our commercial construction markets do not need the OSSA training versions as they do not work on Oil Sands sites. Therefore, DC 17 offers non-OSSA versions of Fall Pro, etc. Here, we use the term ‘Standard’ to discern these from their OSSA version (e.g., ‘Standard’ Fall Pro vs. ‘OSSA’ Fall Pro)
WHMIS2015 is the new version of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems; WHMIS2015 incorporates the United Nation’s Globally Harmonized System, which better globally standardizes hazardous material terms and documents (e.g., the old Material Safety Data Sheet becomes the more standardized Safety Data Sheet). We are well into the transition period from [the original] WHMIS1988 to WHMIS2015. June 1, 2018 is the current date set to shift completely to WHMIS2015. However, these things have a way of dragging out. The bottom line for now: you must be trained in both WHMIS1988 & WHMIS2015. Stay tuned!

Not as intense as SSPC C3, but Lead Worker Awareness offers the basics of lead paint abatement, including: uses of Lead in Industry and Construction (i.e. why is lead in paint?), Lead and other heavy metals toxicity (symptoms, chronic and acute effects, routes on entry, blood testing, etc.), Contamination (risk to children, take home routes, proper decontamination techniques, wash trailers, etc.), Lead regulations in the Prairies (and other provinces, USA, etc.), and SSPC Best Practices (group trigger tasks, classes of contamination, etc.). Written Exam.

Construction Safety Training System (CSTS-09) & Safety Construction Orientation Training (SCOT) are similar on-line programs required by various sites in Alberta and Saskatchewan, respectively. One does not replace the other; if you work in both provinces on industrial sites, you will likely need both.
If you require CSTS or SCOT, contact Chris Hooter, Director of Training, for LINK, USERID and PASSWORD for either CSTS or SCOT.

United Academy is the training arm of United Rentals
United Academy’s CORE 4 consists of Boom Lift, Scissor Lift, Forklift, and Class VII Forklift (e.g., Telehandler or ZoomBoom). The IUPAT and United Academy signed an agreement whereby we can certify trainers for their programs. Corey Bollivar (Calgary), Rodger Watson (Saskatoon), and Mike Iftody (Edmonton) are DC 17 CORE 4 United Academy Instructors. For members that don’t need OSSA EWP, this program will help us immensely.
To enroll, contact Chris. Chris enrolls you in the CORE 4 course[s] of interest. You must have a unique email to be enrolled. You will receive emailed link, userid, and password for the online theory training modules.
After you complete these theory modules, you must schedule a practical. Contact Chris again at that point, and he’ll coordinate. If we can’t organise a practical w/ Corey, Rodger, or Mike, we will contact United and find a convenient time / place for you to meet with a United Rental’s instructor for your equipment practical[s].

Similar to CORE 4, this is United Rental’s Fall Protection. The Canadian rollout has been slow compared to the USA rollout, as United must tailor their program to the specifics of each province. So, this program isn’t quite ready yet. But it will be …

The process is virtually identical to CORE 4. Contact Chris, and you’ll receive a link, userid, and password for online theory training modules. After you complete these modules, you must schedule a practical. Call Chris again at that point, and he’ll coordinate.

Corey Bollivar (Calgary) & Rodger Watson (Edmonton) are DC 17 Fall Pro United Academy instructors. If we can’t coordinate a practical w/ Corey or Rodger, we will contact United and find a convenient time / place for you to meet with a United Rental’s instructor for your Fall Pro practical.

BSO (Basic Safety Orientation) is a relatively new classroom training program that has replaced previous on-line CSTS and OSSA Regional training. Not all sites require BSO, but it is trending.
